In case you missed it, last night’s class was very informative to say the least. We had several question and answer periods, followed by application of said answers. Also, I was notified that the men here don’t lead the women all the way through their turns, so we worked on that too. And that’s today’s tip: Men you should lead the woman ALL the way through her turns, which means pushing her back on her 456 on those simple left, right, half turns, and half right turns. A question for the ladies: I was wondering can you do this – Cook dinner, talk on the phone, help the kids with their homework, listen to the radio all at the same time??

Good Afternoon Steppers,

Well here’s what’s going on this weekend: Today we’re heading over to Michael’s Café located at 5052 N. 7^th Ave cross street are 7^th Ave and Camelback. And it seems that they have gone UP on the price. It’s NOW $10 after 8pm, yep they’ve went up $5. So I’ll see you all BEFORE 8pm LOL. Hey I didn’t make the rules, or the system, but I sure can work the hell out of them. J But they will have live music a DJ playing our favorites, along with great food, and atmosphere. Happy hour free buffet from 4-6 pm.

Saturday head over to the American Legion for Tyrone’s birthday party starting at 8pm. Again it’s free before 8pm, you know I like free. LOL Good music, good fun, out of town guest steppers so let’s have some fun. 1624 E. Broadway on the corner of 16^th street and Broadway--- but don’t quote me on that. J

Let’s all try to remember what you all practiced in class, and let’s put those moves to some good use this weekend.

What to do, What to do

Good Morning Steppers,

YES, that means you too! J For those forty or so new people we had last night. :-) Ladies, don’t forget to practice. Remember what Ms. Angie shown you, and make that work for you. And what I mean by that is, again take steps that are comfortable for you. Don’t take big steps, especially if you’re short. You can’t look cute and sexy taking huge steps that make you look dorky. ;-) Men, such a good job: all of you. Remember to practice your basics, as I said because with all the things you will have the woman doing, thinking about where your feet should go or be shouldn’t be your main focus. Think about that last drill where I had you dance with Ms. Lizz. Remember what it was like trying to remember when to cross, when to step back, when to pull her, AND trying to remember just the basic step for you? So let’s start by removing some of the things you have to think about, and the first would be YOUR basics. Once you get that down, I mean know it like you know your kids, then adding onto what you do in the dance will come much easier. Now for those that will practice at home with your partner, remember to have fun. You’re learning right now so don’t get mad at each other, that’s not part of the game. :-) And here’s something to help with the fun, break out that old video camera that you have up in the attic. You paid good money for that thing, now let’s use it. Tape yourself dancing, and then watch it, and see where you are, what you’re doing, and how to correct if need be. Oh and keep that footage like I did, so when you’re long past being a beginner you can look back at the tape, and have fun all over again.

Now if you want to get some practice in, tonight the steppers are going over to Michael’s Café on 7^th Ave and Camelback. I heard it’s free before 8, but don’t quote me on that, this is Arizona. They could mean between 7:00 and 7:01pm :-) However the case, you’ll be able to see folks doing the Chicago Step, and get some practice in yourself. Oh and one last thing, NEVER worry about those sitting on the side watching you, because they WILL always be sitting on the side, until they come to YOUR class.

OMG! I’m still on a Steppin High from this past weekend in ATL. Let me start by saying Bround Bround Bround Bround---- Bra Bra Bround Bround Bround------ Blowin my mind------ Pretty Lady ------ Makes me feel good----- Like a Friday Yeah, I know you think I’m crazy, but I just can’t get that song out of my head. And neither could the few hundred people there. Man I had so much fun, I’m going back 2 or 3 more times before the end of this year. But coming up THIS weekend we have our very own Patricia Bell’s Birthday Party check out the info below, and we have The Equinox also on Saturday the 10. See the info below, or the attached flyers on that as well. It’s a lot of info to read, so if you know about it then you’re done here. Don’t forget to practice, and get ready for class, you know every time I go somewhere I come back with something.

Labor Day Weekend

This weekend coming up will be a long one for some, and short for others. However, I will have class this Thursday to help you get ready for the upcoming events. Also I’ll be in ATL taking some classes to upgrade my knowledge, and will be back to spread the wealth. Which means this Thursday, will be special. Again challenging the men to think on their feet better, and the women to stay on their feet (the balls of their feet that is) during another but a very trying exercise.

Isn’t it true that “Significant others are like parking spaces? All the good ones are taken except the handicap?” J I’m just saying, it’s something I heard just thought I’d ask. Oh and speaking of something I heard, I just can’t stop chuckling about this one: Always follow your heart, but take your brain with you. Isn’t that the funniest thing? Because I’ve needed THAT info a few times, and I remember saying later “What the Hell was I thinking?” it’s the little things I tell ya` Have a great day, and don’t forget to practice like some of us did Saturday night.

Yep it’s time to get those dancing shoes out from the BACK of the closet, strap them up, or slip them on, or tape them on, or glue them in place and head on down to Chicago Step Class. J And while you’re in that closet digging around for those shoes, if you happen to see your memory in there, grab that too. J You’re going to need it. I picked a number between 10 and 15, can you guess which one? Yep you guess it, and that’s how many moves you’ll have to do today. And all different ones. I know you probably saying that’s too many, but remember that’s only moves 1 through 10 and those are simple, and you’re almost there. And if you purchased moves 11-20, or 21-30, or 30-40, then this will be child’s play for you. Ladies although we really need to work our way up to this, but pick out your favorite footwork pattern, and be ready to put it to the test.

So I’m back from my marvelous trip to LA, for some fun-filled dancing. Funny I was under the impression that I was going back there THIS weekend too. But everyone is going to Oakland, and I’m not driving 12 hours. 11 ½ hours BUT NOT 12. Anyway, I hope everyone has been practicing, I sure have. As I can use ALL the practice I can get. J So you have 3 more days until you’ll have to break out that thinking cap, but it won’t have anything to do with Steppin. LOL A wise man once said “ It ain’t (I know not a word, but that’s what HE said) It ain’t Chinese Arithmetic, stop thinking so much.” Here Here….. Let’s have some Fun!

Yes you read that right (for all of those new people from last night 5 to be exact). First congrats on making the big decision to learn this dance, and Second, remember to always have fun with it. Now if you’re getting this email it’s because I could read your writing, and if you didn’t/don’t, well you’ll have to hear about me talking about your chicken-scratch. Man I thought Helen Keller couldn’t write. J I’m not going to mention any names, but it rhymes with Corvette. LOL You’re lucky I have your info from the other day, I see I’m going to have to cut you off early, no water for you. J OK, now for the good stuff, remember to practice. Do your best to practice it correctly, but if it’s not we can fix that. Most importantly, get that timing and beat down. Having that down, makes everything else easier. Men you also have to remember to keep your hands steady while you’re dancing with a lady. Oh yeah, STOP LOOKING DOWN! Yes, I saw that. J Oh and “Trouble” I hope your feet are doing better today. And to all the new folks, Good Job. You did very well considering all I threw at you on the first day. J So you should be proud, I am.

Good Info to Know

It’s that time again, time for another little helpful hint. And this one is special as I usually NEVER tell this one. I usually wait, or want the women to figure it out all on their own. So here it is, when you’re counting ODD numbers are ALWAYS on the LEFT foot, and EVEN numbers are ALWAYS on the RIGHT foot. I know, go ahead test me. Thanks apology accepted. J Men, that’s something that you SHOULD know as well, because it’s your job to give her commands at the right time. Also men, your count or footwork is different, depending on which basics you’re doing. Oh and don’t forget to keep counting when you hear music, trust me it helps. J Now here’s some things for you-all this weekend, as I will be in LA getting my dance on, stealing moves, and giving them to you. LOL

A LITTLE HELP

I have another little tip for you, something to help you get your timing down. Every time you hear a song try counting to it. Regardless if it’s fast, slow, or super duper fast, just put the count to it. As you begin to make that a habit, soon you won’t have to count as your brain will be trained in hearing a song and getting the rhythm, and beat already. If you do that, when you hear any song, you’ll be able to get that beat AND timing like you’re in the band yourself. J Have fun

NATIONAL STEP DAY

Well another year has come and gone, and I had a good time at the National Step Day event. Although I was attending several events that evening, I managed to attend them all. I got a chance to dance with people, and got a chance to see some improvements within their dance too. Something I did notice is that, memory recall wasn’t the best with everyone. Because this dance is repetitious, I’ll work on getting folks to have that recall. So break out those “Move Lists”, and get ready to be DRILLED on those moves. Also, we’ll welcome newcomers John, Tashia, and Naomi this Thursday. I want to congratulate Ms Monique Sanders for her accomplishment in winning the beginners Step contest at the National Step Event this weekend. CONGRADULATIONS GOOD JOB!

Yesterday I was asked is there a wrong way to step? And the answer is Yes AND No. So let me explain, there ARE so many different styles of the dance, INCLUDING the different methodology it entails. There’s the OLD school style, then there’s the 4 count, and now the latest 6 or 8 count if you will. Now, if you know the difference and can adjust to how the woman is dancing then great, but if you don’t, then a hot mess is stirring on the dance floor. J OK, so as long as you’re having fun with your partner, and you both are doing the same style (method or version) of the dance, then more power to you, and enjoy. However, if the woman is doing one version, and the guy is doing something else, then yep you’re doing it wrong, and it’s going to look that way. Just ask, or watch----- Shoot uh hmm I mean to say………. LOL OK seriously, I’ll make it real easy for you, each method or version of the dance regardless of how new or old, has rules, and in order to have a good dance the men NEED to understand just what those rules are. For example you can’t use the rules of football, while playing basketball. It just doesn’t work. So men need to follow those set rules that apply to the particular style that the women is doing, and NOT follow his OWN rules currently being made up as he goes. You might as well be just regular dancing, trust me it will look better. J

Well it’s almost time. J Let’s see, there’s class tomorrow at the Elk’s at 6pm, and now they’ve added 80’s night, along with steppin music there as well. There’s also steppin music being played over at Bobby C’s too, you decide. And Saturday is National Step Day, and the Steppin Ball along with several birthday parties, an anniversary party, Vegas steppers attending, AND a fun Steppin Contest for those steppers with 1 year or less. This should be a enjoyable night.

In addition, I have DVDs 1,2,3,4 of the It’s G Style combination list. The DVDs along with the list show you 40 different moves and combinations. These are steps that we’ve gone over in class, and some that I threw in there for fun. J

Tips for you

Yes, I’m back from my New York trip, and I must say. I can’t wait to return. I had a pretty good time there, of course I wasn’t driving though:talk about crazy. Anyway, while I was there, I learned some new things, and it’s time to share. So I’ll see you at 6pm, and if not have a great weekend. Oh and if you can, you should practice a little.

First thanks to everyone that came out last night, I know we covered a lot. Don’t forget to add those moves into your rotation, and soon you’ll have a strong combo list. I also want to send a big CONGRATS to Mr. James and his better half on their beautiful new baby girl, which just happens to have the best name ever: Jasmine. Of course I don’t know how they’re spelling it, but that’s how my daughter’s name is spelled. See best name ever. I also want to welcome new stepper Richard from Chicago. And thanks for helping me with those new steppers Ms. Woody.

OK as everyone knows, I feel you should know and or have your basics DOWN-PACKED before venturing out and trying footwork. Now with that being said, ladies remember to practice those what 5 that we went over last night. Actually more if you count those variations that we did. So let’s start here, you have “The Rock” (which can be done on 6 78, or just on 78) then you have the “Shuffle” with a 78 cross cross walk up, and the “Shuffle” again with a “Rock” at the end of it. We practiced the “Sherri” which is a 6 78 step, and the “James Brown” with a left OR right turn, and lastly the :Allyiah” (Rock the boat) and don’t forget to get those 2 poses in. Hey maybe we can all get some practice with again tonight.

Our FAVORITE Turns tonight will be served up on the menu all night. And you’ll soon see there’s nothing to be afraid of. It can’t hurt you, it can’t kill you, although I’ve heard people being beat down by a right turn, but today you’ll have a BIG STICK. J So that’s it, no commentary, no tips, no questions concerning your practice habits, nope nada zilch, just the facts.

SOMETHING FOR NOTHING?

Well I wanted to get some things straight. First, there are the 3% of people that WILL, or CAN pick up this dance without any problem, or extensive practice. And then there’s the rest of us. L Sadly I wasn’t included in that 3%, but I practiced my butt off, and within that same year of starting, I was teaching. Now, I’m not saying that everyone can accomplish that, but what I am saying is that THERE IS NO GETTING AROUND PRACTICING! NONE, ZIP, NADA!!! Even if you ARE like me and can watch a video and pick up moves, YOU STILL HAVE TO TRY IT AND THAT’S PRACTICING. I love that people are interested in the dance, I HATE that people are LAZY with the dance. You are going to have to put in the time sometime, you might as well get it out of the way now. Why be stuck in the same place years later, when you can get it out of the way in about 4 or 5 months? But I get it, that’s too much like right. I love going out dancing, and seeing all the other dancers putting it down. And I love watching those that have started, get better and better. What kills me, is those students that have been students since the beginning of time, and still can’t get their basic together. That’s just lazy. You’re going to have to put in some time to learn this dance, just like everything else worth doing. You put in time to learn to drive, to walk, to talk, to spread the right rumors, gossip, or how to put on make-up. Well here’s something else you’ll need to put some time into learning. Just think of it as a very unique Line Dance. So NO! You’re not going to get this in one visit. No you’re NOT going to get this in ONE lesson. All those folks that you’ve seen on the floor dancing and having fun, yep they put in the practice to get there. Some have worked on their style and moves for years, so they can win contest, yada yada yada, what makes you think that you’re going to take ONE class or one LESSON and suddenly be like them?

Something For Nothing-You want to do nothing, but be able to do everything. Sorry doesn’t work that way in this dance.

I hope you all had a good weekend, I know I did. My faith in dance has been RENEWED! I was reminded just how things should be, and can be when you actually practice. I’m still amazed with what she was able to do, especially with the turns, considering she’s only been dancing 5 months. Now that’s what I’m talking about, 5 months and almost ready to run with the BIG dogs. Impressive, because if she wouldn’t have told me she’d only been dancing or doing our traditional 8 count for 5 months, I would have thought she had been dancing a lot longer than that. Very Nice, Good Job!

Now I’m not for teaching 24/7. And what I mean by that is, when I’m out dancing, I just want to dance. Every now and then I’ll get out there and count for people, and walk them through basic steps. But I don’t like doing that EVERY time I’m out, that’s what class is for. However, I do try to point out small things that will help you get better. And usually it’s just pointing out a bad habit you may have picked up. Just a small pointer to help you progress in this dance. Well, someone told me that they would like to just get one dance in without me saying something about their dancing. (bad habit that they keep doing) OK DONE! I really apologize to that person, and to anyone that I may have done that to, or with. You’re absolutely correct, teaching is for class, and that’s where I’ll keep it from now on. And when I’m out dancing, I’ll keep those insane, strange, and cool steps down to a maybe one per song. I'll save all that other stuff for when I go out of town. Now you say that you love the dance, or that you really want to learn it, well now it’s time to put your dancing where your mouth is. So now you should at least, AT LEAST, PRACTICE 30 MINUTES A DAY. And if you can’t do that, then make sure that you at least get in 3 hours of practice in a week. AND CLASS DOESN’T COUNT. And this practice doesn’t mean try and make up some footwork, it means practice your basic steps. And hopefully you’ll be able to STOP stomping one your 1, and your 4. Your whole count or pattern should look the same, remember you’re just walking. Now if you stomp like that when you’re walking, then you’re all set keep up the good work. J But if not, then you have some more work to do. Have fun, and good luck.

Let's Get Started

Well, now that everyone has had some time to let it all sink in, here’s the new SET IN STONE Schedule. OK from 6 PM until 7 PM, is for those beginners, and those that have not fully grasped the full concept of “The Basics”. That means, if you don’t know your count, YOU’RE A BEGINNER!, if you don’t know your five BASIC patterns, YOU’RE A BEGINNER!, if you don’t know a plan left turn, and a plan right turn, either half turns, YOU ARE A BEGINNER! And if you’re looking at your feet, or your neighbors feet trying to figure out, or see if you’re still with the group or not, YOU’RE A BEGINNER! And if you think you know them, that’s great, just be ready for the test to make sure you know them. Don’t worry it’s only going to be 2 songs, one done by yourself with me calling out those steps, and NOPE there won’t be any breaks, or rests in between. And the other with me leading you. Passing the test will insure that you know the steps, and can execute them correctly. And the last is verbal, I’ll ask you in depth questions about those basic steps. So you might want to actually know what foot does what, when, where, why, and how, because I’m asking. It’s time to build the foundation of your dance, and we need that to be STRONG. And it’s NOT strong if you do a single turn, or a double turn, and lose your count. And ladies, if you can’t do those simple things, then YOU NEED TO STOP TRYING TO DO FOOTWORK. Let me say that again, LEARN THE BASICS FIRST, BEFORE YOU VENTURE OUT TRYING BRAIN SURGERY. Why are you trying to drive on the freeway, when you can’t even drive in normal traffic? Don’t like that analysis, how about this one: Why are you trying to perform brain surgery, when you haven’t even finished your first year of med school? Shouldn’t you at least learn the rules first, or learn how things are supposed to work first? OK look at it this way, you’re in the hospital for a checkup, and two doctors come in. One of the doctors comes in and has his stuff together, clipboard, got your chart, knows your name, and makes you feel at ease with the procedure that’s going to take place. Or, do you want the 10 year old kid that comes in, clothes mess up and dirty from playing in the dirt earlier, name tag falling off, and for the life of him, can’t figure out how to use the stethoscope? YEP, that would be those folks that do the basics they WAY they want to, and not the way it’s supposed to be done. Why am I being so mean you say? I’m not being mean, but getting back to what I KNOW is best for you. You’re going to hate it at first, but learn to appreciate what I did for you later. And just so everyone knows, I’m not looking for the biggest class, or the biggest following, or trying to be liked. And I know I’m going to lose people because they think because they have done the basics for an hour last week, that they shouldn’t have to do it anymore they got it. Well cool, I don’t want those folks, because they’re going to jack up the dance anyway. If you’re going to be stepping on my feet, at least you can want to do it right and just step on my feet less and less. J I just want people here to dance with, so I don’t have to always drive to Vegas, or LA to dance. But I don’t mind doing so. J

Now for those that ARE taking the BEGINNERS class from 6 to 7 PM, the cost is $5. And those that are staying the whole time, meaning taking the next level of the class then it’s $7 for 2 hours. Get ready because we are getting back to solid LEADING, and SOLID SOLID FOLLOWING. MEN WE WILL LEARN THE 3 MAIN BASICS FOR YOU! Because once you move up to the next level, you’ll use them OFTEN, and you’ll need to know how to get into them while doing another one.

Too Much Fun!

I’m back from a marvelous Weekend in LA. I had a super super time, and was really sad to leave on Sunday. In fact, I had to be told, If you get another dance, you’ll have to get another flight….. L But at the cost of 3 times what I paid for the flight, I told her well sorry I got to go. LOL So we have like 11 more days until the Big AZ Steppin Event held here. I’m excited about that. So much so, that this weekend I spent thinking of new moves, and combinations for the men. Ladies, most of these DO NOT have 78 in them, and if you’re trying to figure out what the guy is doing, instead of following YOUR steps, then you’ll miss a step, and it’s over. Also ladies that love to turn, get ready. Men make sure you practice your about-face turns, and turning in general. As you’re going to see stars too. J Bring some motion sickness pills with you, you may need it. J

Confidence Builders 8:10 – Until (9, 9:30ish) Here we’ll practice what we learned that day, and from previous classes and go over them and make sure you have it.
